BLACK MIDI TALKING HEADS

We caught our first glimpse of black midi's brilliant 'talking heads' almost a year ago when they delivered an electrifying live version of the track for NTS captured by Oli Bayston at Flesh at Bone Studios (see List Pick here). The new studio recording of the track, produced by heavyweight Dan Carey, is arguably the band's most upbeat release today as Geordie Greep and Matt Kelvin's bright guitar riffs do battle on top of Cameron Picton's off-the-wall bass lines and Morgan Simpson's continually astonishing drumming. Adorned with additional sound effects that blow eerily in the back ground, there's even an unexpected flute breakdown that takes places around 2 minutes 25 seconds on this new and improved interpretation. As Greep explains, “We’ve always tried to make it heavy but danceable, melodic but good rhythms,” echoing the Talking Heads DNA present in Black Midi’s work. “It is accessible music, there are experimental aspects that we’ve taken from when we went crazy at the beginning, we’ve just reined it in to make something that is pop music.” Listen here now. -Holly Mullineaux
